DSL Woes

Verizon is pushing hard to get rid of DSL and get it's customers to switch to the more expensive FIOS technology. I have received numerous offers from Verizon for deals on FIOS. I was told by one of their salespeople that "they want to get rid of all the DSL".

I am still on DSL because it is the cheapest internet option for me. Lately I have noticed a significant change in my DSL bandwidth. I can no longer watch a youtube video without it pausing several times to buffer.

Even text-based web pages such a blog sites I visit are loading very slowly. Checking the speed on http://www.speedtest.net shows that my DSL connection is now running in the neighborhood of .74 Mbps. This is slower than the connection was when I started with this service, as past speednet test results indicate that it was above 1.5 Mbps.

What they have done is to reduce my bandwidth to the lowest possible tier to force me to upgrade either my DSL or to switch to FIOS. I have verified this by going to the Verizon website to see what my upgrade options were. Man, was I surprised! They made these changes without informing me.

So, in protest I am just going to cancel my service and tell them I am switching to Comcast. They are offering me deals as well.

Cry baby bell phone company copper wire plant is going to pot in most places because that's exactly what they want you to do. Switch over to FIOS and contract. Call every single time you have trouble or it is not up to snuff. Document. Also make sure you get a credit for those times.

They're probably not doing much to fix the older copper wire plant. Everytime someone has trouble in the plant they are probably just switching the line in trouble to another set of wires NOT taking the time to find & fix what is actually causing trouble in that run of cable from your house to their central office.

Keep after them. Inform your state utility regulators and FCC of those troubles. Id' even call the local BBB telling you are not getting what your paying for.

The BBB DOES NOT get involved with phone companies. It's the FCC, PUC or whatever the entity is called in your state. Look.....Verizon is not going to invest monies to replace outdated copper plant, plain and simple. Not cost effective and poor return for their dollar. And DSL or (Damn Slow Line in Verizon's case) SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS unless you are close to their central office AND the cable is in decent condition. DSL only works decent within 18,000 feet (18kf) from the central office after which you begin to lose speed because it does not work well on unshielded twisted pair(s)(UTP) which is what your phone line is. Plus, degradation of the actual copper contributes to the reliability of your service just as it would with a voice line (static, noise etc). I worked for Verizon as a tech and I don't have DSL. I have internet through my cable TV provider.......much more reliable and faster than DSL. Only Fios is faster because you are totally on fiber and the only copper involved is in your house. The reason it's expensive is they bundle the service to get the most bang for their buck (Verizon's buck). They spent so much money building out the Fios network they need to recoup as much as they can as soon as they can.

Think of it like this.........just like the drug companies. They spend enormous amounts of money on R&D and manufacturing of the drug, they then have a patent for a number of years to recoup the monies spent to create the drug before any other company can make a generic version of it to sell at a lower cost.

Last I knew Verizon did not offer Fios stand alone internet without the complete package. But this may change in the future.Get broadband through you cable provider. Yoy will pay more but you will be happy. Good luck.

Notice a post from 03-08-11.
I had the same problem with DSL to FIOS but my problem escalated as described.
Before you cancel, make sure you don't have a hidden termination fee and an implied contract.
This company is pathetic!
Just my opinion...

Man, that is all just BRUTAL. You really should check out DISH Network, where I’m a customer and employee. I know DISH has the most HD channels in the industry as well as less expensive programming packages. My favorite thing is the TV Everywhere app for your mobile device that literally allows you to watch live or recorded TV off your home receiver anywhere, something FiOS can’t offer.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago, couldn't stream Netflix anymore without constant stop and reloading, I called them they did a line test and said there was a problem with my line, they sent a Tech to my house, he measured the signal, it was OK into the house but weak getting to my PC .... result, my 8 year old westell router had gone bad, he installed a new router...everything works great now.
