Verizon reported me to a credit bureau mistakenly

I had service with verizon... then I moved house. When I moved house, I terminated my service with them and shipped the equipment via UPS as they instructed. over the course of the next 2 months, Verizon started sending me letters saying that I owed them large amounts of money for the equipment, including tons of empty boxes for me to send it back to them.

They lost the equipment and eventually found it, 3 months later. They then told me it would take another 2 or 3 months for the charge to fall off my account, which in the meantime loaded up a bunch of payment late fees.

They told me that all the fees would drop off and I would have nothing to worry about.

Last week I got notified from my credit monitoring service that they put a claim on my credit history for the outstanding amount, which were the late fees related to the lost equipment.

Verizon never tried contacting me about having to pay the remaining amount nor warned me of reporting it to credit. had they done that, I would have tried to take care of the issue then. They even referred me to their collections company, "Soloman and Soloman", who I had never heard of.

After weeks of phone calls and being transferred between daprtments, they are saying I owe the money and are refusing to refund it and take the mark off of my credit history.

I'm being forced to pay it. the resulting amount ended up being just shy of $200
