terrible customer service

My 86 year old mother has been a verizon customer for 7 years. She asked me to cancel the service based on the contract ending and her wanting to switch to a different carrier. I did, though she continued to receive a bill. The amount was only $42, but when I called, they insisted I did not cancel the service and kept referring to records of conversations that confirmed their points of view. When I told them that my 'record' was different, they refused to yield, despite the fact that my mother had not been using her phone for over 1 year, let alone since the day I cancelled the service. They would not recognize the long term customer loyalty nor the possibility that their record of the conversation might have been wrong. They were insistent and smiling (over the phone I could hear their grin) but refused to yield. I won't bother contesting it through legal action cause it is not worth it. But I am committed to tell this story so that everyone know what kind of company they are dealing with if they choose to go with verizon. My thought? Don't.
