Beware if you cancel your land line and don't take the same number with you.

I cancelled a business land line with Verizon to get away from the Verizon sales calls that just couldn't be stopped. Obviously didn't take same number to new carrier. Verizon put a recording on the cancelled number that offers to direct caller to a similar business in the same area - effectively giving away my business callers to competitors. Verizon cust service says it is automatic if the number is not picked up by another carrier because it is assumed the customer is out of business. They assure me that it is not slanderous or defamatory because it would have first gone past their legal beagles. I just can't understand how someone not on drugs or alcohol could come up with this.

Was that landline actually classified as a business or residential line? Alot of smaller businesses simply get a landline or POTS line.

It is a very grey area redirecting a call to a similar business. What criteria do they use?-zipcode, area code, kind of business, businesses with a Verizon landline only? This is what I would ask.
