Complete contract and early termination fee

My phone died 5 days before my contract was complete so I went to straight talk and I paid my verizon contract in full and I was still charged the early termination fee. Verizon and the team of scum lawyers don't seem to have any understanding of contract law. My consideration was the money I agreed to pay and I did that, how does the law allow for me to pay more than the amount of the written agreement.

My guess is that if you transferred the number that is what triggered the fee. I would speak to a manager and give them a chance to straighten it out. I would also show any canceled checks etc showing the last payment because that IS your obligation to PAY for the service. To me until they did NOT recieve that last pay they had no right billing a cancellation fee.

If they don't respond I would try the local Better Business Bureau and the state consumer protection agencies if there are any. Since this is a contract issue I don't know what the utility regulators will do. You might file a detailed complaint just to have it on record. I would call your state representive and see who handles billing and contract issues by themselves and/or with a phone company.
